Liverpool picked up their sixth European Cup by beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Spanish capital on Saturday night.

It was their first Champions League success since Gerrard led the Anfield outfit to victory in 2005.

The former midfielder is now manager at Rangers having left Liverpool in 2015.But having seen Jordan Henderson captain his former club to European glory, Gerrard couldn’t help but feel proud.“When Jordan Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy above his head, my first feeling was one of pride,” Gerrard wrote for The Times.“Proud that Liverpool were back at the top of European football and especially proud of Jordan, because I know how hard he works.

“I know the sacrifices he has made, the pressure and scrutiny that he has been under.

“If I had to name someone I regard as the ultimate professional, then Jordan would come right at the top of the list. He is immaculate in the way he lives his life.“Some people don’t see the stuff behind the scenes, the gym work, the way he eats, but he is an incredible role model.

“He is selfless. He puts himself at the back of the queue because he looks after everyone else first.

“He puts Jordan Henderson last.”

Henderson lifted the cup alone in front of his team-mates on Saturday night.

But the 28-year-old wanted manager Jurgen Klopp to join him.”I asked him to lift the trophy with us but he said that was my job,” Henderson added.

“We all love him of course. He’s got a special relationship with the players.

“If you ask the players that he’s worked with previous they’ll say the same. He’s a special manager.

“Us as players are just delighted to be playing under him and learning from him and hopefully we can continue to do that and go again next season.”
